I have recently returned to Perth, Western Australia from my visit to Salzburg. I arrived in Salzburg @ 1215hrs on Christmas Eve & was picked up by Salzburg Sightseeing Tours @ 1330hrs. Even though I don't speak any other language other than English I'd have to say being in Oberndorf & listening to Silent Night Holy Night being sung was a very moving experience & certainly brought tears to my eyes especially as walking back to the bus after listening to the carol being sung the Village Church Bells then rung out the carol again. This caused an American Lady & Myself to start singing the Carol in English to be joined by Wolfgang, our Tour Guide & some of the other Tourists from our group. This experience certainly helped to put my First Ever White Christmas in a very very special place in my heart & memories. Thankyou Salzburg & & Mr Mohr/Mr Gruber from the bottom of my heart.

One of my fondest memories of my Father is him singing Silent Night in German. His Parent immigrated separately from Hungary at young ages. Due to the fact that his Parents spoke German, my Father was confronted physically numerous times during WWII. This was the only time I ever heard him speak in German.

Als Pastor einer ev.-freikirchlichen Gemeinde lasse ich am Heiligabend gern alle sechs Strofen singen - wobei ich gerade auf die drei unbekannten nicht verzichten möchte.

I like the idea of a literal translation. It is good for those of us learning or reviewing German. A minor point: I think "der Engel" is a plural so in a literal translation it should appear as a plural.

Carl Mauracher was my great-great grandfather. I inherited a crucifix that he carved when he helped creat the song Silent Night Holy Night. It was passed down to Carl's son, when his son passed, it was given to an uncle, to another uncle, to my grandmother, to my dad and then to me. I have the documentation to prove it origin.
