I have always loved music. Silent Night was the first song learned to play on the piano. When I found out I was related to Franz X Gruber I was blown away! It happend at a time in my life that I needed to be reminded that family is forever, music is forever. This song surpassed all boundries, it is the most beautiful song ever written.

Ich denke, ich werde dieses Jahr mal das Grab eines Verwandten besuchen. Eben jenes Mannes. Ahnenforschung ist was tolles!

After World War II my father received a letter addressed to the chief magistrate of Millville, NJ , USA. It was from a family which was unknown to us. They lived in Worms, Germany outside of Heidelberg Germany near the oberndorf river. They were.asking for food or clothes as assistance for a family not then known to us. In fact we didn't really know we had any German ancestry nor Austrian. My father gave the letter to a Jewish man he knew who headed a correctional institution. He proceeded to check up on the family and found that they too were like my father violinists and musicians for many generations. They also were before, during and after the war traffic police in Heidelberg. He recommended we send what we could and we did. His following statement has been a curiousity since that time. The Warden said they lost track of our family since at a point there was a bastard minstrel born with no parental marriage records. But he said it may be so that you are related to Josef Mohr the co-creator of Silent Night. To this time I don't know if there is any relation but it's nice to think about this Christmas here in Montclair, New Jersey as we heard the song last night and this Christmas day have a guest playing it on the violin for my niece and her children and guests.

This is a great web site having visited the chuch, back in the 1950's. I will never forget the church. My grandmother came from Germany.

My grandmother, Martha Mohr, was a decendent of Franz Mohr. As a child she would tell the story passed down through her father Charles and his father about their uncle who wrote the most beautifull Christmas song (which she taught me in German).

Fr. Joseph Mohr created the one song that truly exemplifies the spirit of Christmas.

Dear Friends,
I greatly appreciate this fine tribute to my relative. My great-grandmother was Maria Gruber, and she was first cousins with Franz Gruber. She was married to Michael SanHamel, and they came to America in 1910. I have always treasured Stille Nacht close to my heart due to my connection to it. I too, like my relative, have a love for both teaching and writing music. It was wonderful to have an opportunity to learn so much about him. Thank you for that. Now I know the places to visit when I come to Austria! Merry Christmas, all!
