The Young Student’s Writer and Reader. A Gift for Children who wish to learn to read and write in a short time. The frontispiece is decorated with a copperplate engraving, showing a boy reading a book in a pasture beneath a tree. The book is printed in old German script. It was written by the educationalist Franz Michael Vierthaler, a contemporary of Gruber. Vierthaler, known as the “Salzburg Pestalozzi” (a reference to the famous Swiss pedagogue and educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi), played a major role in the reform of public education in the region and established a teacher-training seminar in the city of Salzburg.
