Seasons greetings from Oberndorf, the "Silent Night" - town

Special "Silent Night Postmark 2011"

The special Christmas postmark 2011 is titled "10th Anniversary of a town". The Silent Night town of Oberndorf, where the famous Christmas Carol was sung for the first time, is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its status as a town. This is symbolised in the lower part of the postmark. In the upper part, next to the sheet music illustration, the most important touristic feature of our town is shown - the Silent Night Chapel. It was built as a memorial to the two creators of the carol, Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr, on the site of the church of St. Nicholas, which was where the carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" was performed for the first time on Christmas Eve 1818. Today this simple carol is sung in over 300 languages and dialects and is considered to be a message of peace for all humanity .

The post office in the museum "Bruckmannhaus", next door to the Silent Night Chapel will be open from Thursday, 8th December 2011 until Friday, 23rd. December 2011 , from 10 am - 4 pm and on Saturday, 24th December 2011 , from 9am - 12 am.
