Special „Silent night postmark 2009“
The motive of the special stamp for the Christmas post office in the Silent-Night-area is dedicated Leopold Kohr on his 100th birthday. DDr. Leopold Kohr (October 5th, 1909 – February 2nd, 1994), University professor, philosopher and political economist and famous member of the Oberndorf community was an Alternative Nobel Prize laureate and mentor of his time.
Nowadays, Leopold Kohrs teachings of the „human scale“ become more and more important. It was from the small „Silent-Night“ community of Oberndorf that he departed to carry his thoughts about „small autonomous units“ into the world. Leopold Kohr never forgot his hometown, wherever he was. He taught at universities in New Jersey, Puerto Rico and, after his return to Europe in England and Wales. He is buried at the cemetery of Oberndorf, not far from the Silent-Night-Chapel.
Through Leopold Kohr Oberndorf near the river Salzach left a message in the world. There is a close connection to the Christmas carol „Silent Night, holy night“, which was performed for the first time at the nocturn of Christmas Eve 1818. The simplicity of its text and its message of peace and confidence travelled from the town of Oberndorf – like 100 years later Leopold Kohr did – into the world. Today the carol is sung in over 350 languages and has not stopped fascinating people from around the world. Leopold Kohr left his values ad his message for Oberndorf and the whole world as well.
For the 150th anniversary of the world famous Christmas carol „Silent Night, Holy Night“ in the year 1968 the first special postmark was issued in Oberndorf. Since then, every year in December, a special post office has been installed, where until December 24th, visitors from all over the world can stamp their mail with a special Silent-Night-postmark.
The post office in the "Museum Bruckmannhaus“, next to the Silent Night Chapel will be open from Monday, Dec. 8th 2009 to Tuesday, Dec. 23rd, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m and on Dec. 24th, 2009 from 9 to 12 a.m. Should it not be possible for you to travel to Oberndorf personally, the employees of the Oberndorf Tourism Association will be glad to forward your Christmas mail.
