My Grandfather Frank Rieser was from Zell am Ziller and this past fall while visiting my Austrian cousins, we had an opportunity to visit the Strasser homesite. Unfortunately it was closed but it still was a thrill to visit the place so connected to the beginnings of this beautiful carol.

Sehr geehrter Herr Obmann Gerhard Haring!

Hello. My husband and children are related to Franz Gruber. They are great nephews many times over. We see much German tradition in our families. They were a farming family very closed to the Catholic church.Related to many priests and nuns. So glad to have stumbled on this sight.

It appears that my family is related to Franz Gruber through his first wife, Maria Elisabeth, as children of her first marriage. When they married, Franz adopted her children to himself and his name, and my family descends from that adoption.
As the story goes, Maria may have stillborn him a son, the grief of which sent her into muteness for months. Hearing the Stille Nacht composition on Christmas Eve broke into her sorrow and loosened her tongue.

Great site! Thanks for this great resource, particularly the translation of the original German words. The words have definitely been altered by translators.

Saw the posting of Denice Louisiignau, and could not forward a reply. I am also a great, great, great, grandchild of Franz Gruber, my great grandmother being Lugarda Gruber, grandchild for Franz Gruber. Would be interested in contact by Denice L.

I have been trying to do some research on Franz Xaver Gruber. I have been told we are related on my father's side, that he is my great great great grandfarther. What an honor that would be.

Hello silent night people ,
Our amator theater company is performing a play in december and I'm the waitor in a croatian restaurant. The director of the play would like me to sing 'stille nacht' in Croatian.
Do you know of any recordings of 'Tahi Noc' by a single male singer , preferably a bariton?
Thank you very much in advance.
