Sewing-Box Nativity

Museum Silent Night Museum Oberndorf
Location Oberndorf

Sewing-box nativity which opens up; lined with paper inside with a picture of Laufen inside the lid. The nativity figures are the traditional Kreuzermandl figures; the ox and ass are made of wood. As it was not possible to sail on the river during the winter months, the local boatmen had to earn their living with other work. Some built nativity scenes that they sold in the Christmas period or went from house to house, presenting the boxed scene, singing songs and reciting wishes. Their pay was usually food. This precious 200 year old nativity scene has survived from that era.
